
UPDATE: Hearing Scheduled for State of Indiana v. Marvin Joe Layne

A hearing is set to take place on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. in Courthouse 2, located at 112 S. Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN 46601, Room 202, for the case State of Indiana v. Marvin Joe Layne (Case Number 71D04-2501-CM-000042).
The case involves allegations that Marvin Joe Layne assaulted St. Joseph County Councilman Dan Schaetzle during a private political meeting in November 2024. Prosecutors have charged Layne with a misdemeanor battery under Indiana Code 35-42-2-1(c)(1)/MB. Section (C) defines battery as "a person who knowingly or intentionally:(1) touches another person in a rude, insolent, or angry manner;"
Additionally, reports indicate that a No Contact Order will be served to Layne in connection with the incident. You can see a copy of that order below.

THE DEFENDANT IS ORDERED TO HAVE NO CONTACT WITH: Daniel Schaetzle
in person, by telephone or letter, through an intermediary, or in any other way, directly or indirectly, except through an attorney of record, while released from custody pending trial. This includes, but is not limited to, acts of harassment, stalking, intimidation, threats, and physical force of any kind.
This provision shall also be effective even if the defendant has not been released from lawful detention.
THE DEFENDANT IS ORDERED TO HAVE NO FIREARMS, DEADLY WEAPONS, OR AMMUNITION IN HIS/HER POSSESSION.
THE DEFENDANT SHALL NOT VISIT THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS DURING THE PERIOD OF HIS/HER RELEASE: (a) wherever the Defendant knows him/her/them to be located;
